How to Get a Dementia Diagnosis in Australia

If you are concerned about memory loss or cognitive changes in yourself or a loved one, here is the recommended pathway.

1

See your GP first

Your GP is the starting point. They will conduct initial cognitive screening tests (such as the MMSE or GPCOG), review medications and refer you for further assessment if needed. Be honest about all symptoms you have noticed.

2

Specialist referral

Your GP may refer you to a geriatrician, neurologist or psychogeriatrician for a comprehensive assessment. This typically includes detailed cognitive testing, brain imaging (MRI or CT scan) and blood tests to rule out other causes.

3

Memory clinic assessment

Many hospitals operate memory clinics staffed by multidisciplinary teams. These provide comprehensive assessments and can fast-track diagnosis. Ask your GP for a referral or contact Dementia Australia on 1800 100 500 to find your nearest clinic.

4

Diagnosis and care plan

Once a diagnosis is confirmed, your specialist will discuss the type and stage of dementia, treatment options, and help you develop a care plan. This is also the time to discuss legal and financial planning while capacity exists.

5

Access support services

Contact My Aged Care (1800 200 422) to arrange an assessment for government-funded support services. Dementia Australia (1800 100 500) can connect you with local support groups, counselling and respite care.
